How Our Captive Works
We understand that the group captive approach to self funding can seem a little complex at first. So we created a visual graphic to help break it down that is now affectionately referred to as the “Layer Cake”.
Roundstone’s Layer Cake contains three layers: 1) Healthcare costs paid by the employer, 2) healthcare costs shared with other employers, and 3) healthcare costs shifted to the stop-loss carrier.
Everyone has their own style when delivering this slide. You can chalk-talk it, or review the graphic in detail during your initial presentation. However you slice it, the Layer Cake is an indispensable slide to help you and your clients thoroughly understand the Roundstone solution.
Telling Our Story…and Making it Retellable
We created a Discussion Guide to help you tell Roundstone’s story in a clear and concise way. The Guide simplifies our message, distills the key points, and backs them up with data. It also leads to a compelling next step. We also developed an accompanying video that features EVP of Sales, Rob Hamilton, and a roleplay between an advisor and an employer.

Bywater is a third-party administrator (TPA) affiliated with Roundstone. We offer a one-stop-shop experience for self-funded health benefits and will work with you to guide your clients through the process every step of the way. Bywater is committed to high member satisfaction and delivers personal care and timely, accurate, and responsive service.
A Customer-first Mindset
Superior customer experience is the cornerstone of an effective self-funded health plan. That’s why we prioritize delivering superior and personalized customer service.
And we do take it personally. We work one-on-one with you to always ensure your clients the best customer experience. Our team of relationship managers works side-by-side with advisors and employers to prioritize care and cost-containment solutions to help your clients save money. Our approach is special in the self-insurance world. While all Roundstone customers have a dedicated care team, we also have specialized teams for different parts of the process:
- Implementation and Onboarding teams. These teams operate on the Bywater side and help employers joining a group captive to design benefits documents, organize accounting, and understand what to expect from a self-insured plan. They work hand-in-hand with advisors throughout the process.
- Bywater Service Center. The TPA service center teams help plan members understand their benefits and answer questions at an everyday level.
- Relationship Management Team. These teams have accountability for the Roundstone service side, including renewals and problem-solving for all advisors and their clients.

Submission requirements will differ if the employer group is currently fully insured or self-funded. This is because the funding mechanisms and the availability of claims data are different. To help with this process, we have prepared Medical Captive Submission Checklists, one for current fully-insured employers and one for current self-funded employers.
To receive the most timely and competitive proposal, be sure to provide all requested information.
