An employer\u2019s employee benefits program is one key area where you can activate DEI, creating healthcare to provide effective care to people with diverse backgrounds, beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors. Nor is it promoting discrimination.\u00a0 Numerous studies show that social determinants of health (SDOH) &#8211; non-medical factors that impact an individual\u2019s health or pursuit of health \u2013 can affect health outcomes. Some examples of SDOH include things like do they live in a food desert where it is difficult to find fresh and healthy food? Do they belong to a strong ethnic community? Do they own a car and have access to transportation? How high is their health literacy? Are they living alone?\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition, demographics matter, especially age, race and sex. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/medical-mistakes-are-likely-women-minorities-rcna133726\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">recent BMJ study<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> by Dr. David Newman-Toker, a professor of neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, showed that women and racial and ethnic minorities are 20% to 30% more likely than white men to experience a misdiagnosis. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.clevelandclinic.org\/2024\/02\/02\/racial-disparities-in-infant-mortality\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Black newborns die at more than two times the rate of white newborns. While a yoga class might be appealing to me (and it is!), it might be intimidating or not interesting to other people. This doesn\u2019t mean we shouldn\u2019t enjoy a good stretch.
